The Drunken Duck

A Pretoria East pub and grill that opened in 2025, needing a site with enough personality to be worth visiting and enough discipline to answer the only three questions anyone actually has.

The The Drunken Duck website homepage, designed and built by Fusion By Design

The brief

Nearly everyone landing on a pub website wants one of three things: what is on the menu, what is happening this week, and where you are. Everything else is decoration, and a restaurant site that buries the menu behind a slideshow is actively costing the venue covers.

The Drunken Duck also needed an identity from scratch - the venue was new, and the name invites a character that a wordmark alone would waste.

What we built

A five-item navigation - Home, About us, Menu, Specials & Events, Contact Us - and no more. The menu and the events page are one tap from anywhere, which is the whole functional requirement.

The identity centres on an illustrated duck mascot in a hat with a beer, set in a green against a dark wood ground. It is warm rather than slick, which is the correct register for a neighbourhood pub and grill: the design should feel like the room.

Design notes

A mascot is a genuinely useful asset for hospitality because it survives the crop. It works as a profile picture, on a coaster, on a shirt and on signage without needing the full wordmark, which a purely typographic identity cannot do.
