“How much does a website cost?” is the question we’re asked most often, and every honest answer starts with “it depends” - which isn’t much use to someone trying to budget for a new site. So here’s what website pricing actually looks like in South Africa in 2026, and what drives the number up or down.
Typical pricing bands
Real prices vary widely depending on who you hire and what you need, but as a general guide:
- Starter / brochure site (3-5 pages): R3 500 - R8 000
- Custom business website (up to 10 pages): R8 000 - R20 000
- E-commerce store: R15 000 and up, depending on the number of products and features
- Larger custom platforms: quoted per project, since scope varies too much for a fixed band
For reference, our own pricing starts at R3 500 for a Basic site and R8 000 for Ultra, our most popular package.
What actually moves the price
Page count. More pages means more design and content decisions, not just more typing.
Custom design versus template. A bespoke design costs more than a generic template, but it’s usually the difference between looking credible and looking interchangeable with every other business in your niche.
Functionality. A contact form is simple. Online stores, booking systems, member logins and third-party integrations all add real development time, and the price reflects that.
Content. Do you already have copy and photos, or do they need to be created? Professional copywriting and photography aren’t cheap, but they’re often what separates a site that converts from one that just sits there looking nice.
SEO and performance. Building a site that’s genuinely fast and structured to rank on Google takes more skill - and more time - than one that just looks fine in a browser preview. This is usually where the cheapest quotes cut corners.
Costs beyond the build
Budget for these too, since they’re easy to forget when comparing quotes:
- Domain name - roughly R100-R200 per year
- Hosting - an ongoing monthly or annual fee (see our own hosting platform, Atomic Hosting)
- Maintenance - keeping the site secure, updated and backed up
- Future changes - new pages or features as the business grows
Cheap and affordable aren’t the same thing
A R1 500 website usually costs more in the long run - slow, insecure, invisible on Google, and painful to update. Affordable means fair value for what you’re getting: a site that’s fast, professional, and actually brings in enquiries. That’s the number worth optimising for, not just the sticker price.
Getting a fair quote
Ask for a fixed, written quote up front. Be specific about your goals - leads, bookings, online sales - so the quote actually matches what you need. And prioritise mobile speed and SEO over pure visual polish; a site that looks great but ranks nowhere isn’t doing its job.
